Why am I so bloated and gassy on a GLP-1?

The short answer: Bloating and gas come from food and gas moving through your gut more slowly — common, usually harmless, and helped by smaller meals. This is a common GLP-1 side effect.

Why it happens

Slowed digestion means food and gas linger longer, which feels like bloating and pressure. It's closely linked with constipation — when things back up, bloating follows.

How long it lasts

It usually eases as your gut adapts, and improves a lot when constipation is kept under control.

What helps

  • Smaller, slower meals; don't rush or gulp air
  • Stay on top of constipation with fiber and fluids
  • Walk after meals to move gas through
  • Go easy on carbonated drinks and known gassy foods

Nutrition tips

  • Introduce fiber gradually to avoid extra gas
  • Stay hydrated
  • Notice trigger foods (beans, cruciferous veg, sugar alcohols)

What may make it worse

  • Carbonated drinks and drinking through a straw (both add swallowed air)
  • Adding a lot of fiber at once instead of gradually
  • Sugar alcohols in sugar-free products (sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol)
  • Skipping walking after meals

Urgent warning signs — seek emergency care

Any of the signs below can indicate a serious medical event. Call your local emergency number or go to the nearest urgent care.

  • Severe, rapidly worsening bloating with pain AND vomiting
  • A hard, distended belly with no passing of gas or stool (possible obstruction)
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially pain that radiates to the back

When to contact your prescriber

These are not emergencies but do warrant a call or a message to your prescribing clinician.

  • Bloating that persists longer than a few days without gas or a bowel movement
  • New, worsening bloating after a dose increase that is not settling

Track this against your dose. Logging bloating & gas week by week shows whether it's actually easing — and gives your prescriber real data.
