Ozempic vs Wegovy

Yes and no. They contain the exact same active drug — semaglutide — made by the same company. But Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management, and Wegovy goes up to a higher dose (2.4 mg vs 2.0 mg). So they're the same molecule with different labels, doses, pens, and insurance coverage.

Wegovy is the one actually approved and dosed for weight loss (up to 2.4 mg), and the STEP 1 trial that showed ~15% average weight loss used that dose. Ozempic can produce weight loss too, but using it for weight loss is off-label and it caps at 2.0 mg. For pure weight management, Wegovy is the on-label choice — but access and cost often decide it.

Some clinicians prescribe Ozempic off-label for weight loss, often because it's easier to get covered than Wegovy. It's legal and common, but it isn't the FDA-approved use, and it tops out at a lower dose than Wegovy. This is a decision to make with your prescriber.

Both carry high US list prices — roughly $1,000–$1,350 per month before insurance. What you actually pay depends heavily on coverage: diabetes drugs like Ozempic are more often covered, while many plans exclude weight-management drugs like Wegovy.
