Foods to avoid (or limit) on GLP-1 medications

Very little is truly “banned” on GLP-1 medications, but some foods are far more likely to cause nausea, reflux or bloating. Here they are, and what to eat instead.

Important
These are foods to limit, not necessarily eliminate. The medication slows stomach emptying, so greasy, fried, very sugary, and very large meals are the usual triggers. Portion and preparation matter as much as the food itself.

The main triggers

LimitWhyBetter swap
Greasy & fried foodsFat slows digestion further → nauseaGrilled, baked or air-fried versions
Very large mealsOverwhelm a slowed stomachSmaller plates; stop at comfortable full
AlcoholHits harder; empty calories; low blood sugarSparkling water; one drink with food

Carbonated drinks / sodaBloating and gasStill or sparkling water, unsweetened tea
Very fatty meatsSaturated fat is a common triggerLean poultry, fish, tofu, lean cuts
Fried fast food (large)Grease + big portionsGrilled options; single portions
Spicy foods (if sensitive)Can worsen reflux/nausea for someMilder seasoning; test small amounts

Why these foods trigger nausea

GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying — food leaves your stomach more slowly. High-fat and very large meals sit the longest, which is why grease and big portions are the top culprits. Sugar-plus-fat combinations (fried desserts, milkshakes) are especially likely to cause trouble, and carbonation adds gas and bloating.

Smart swaps shopping list

  • Swap frying for the oven, grill or air fryer.
  • Swap sugary drinks for water, sparkling water and unsweetened tea.
  • Swap large desserts for fruit, dark chocolate, or protein-based treats.
  • Swap fatty cuts for lean poultry, fish, tofu and beans.
  • Build the plate protein-and-vegetable first; keep carbs a modest side.

Frequently asked questions

What foods should I avoid on Ozempic?

Limit greasy and fried foods, very large meals, alcohol, high-sugar sweets and drinks, carbonated beverages, and very fatty meats. These are the most common triggers for nausea, reflux and bloating.

Do I have to give these foods up completely?

Usually not. Most can be enjoyed occasionally in small portions and with lower-fat preparation. It is about frequency and amount, not total elimination.

Why do fatty foods cause nausea?

Fat slows stomach emptying, which is already slowed by the medication. Food lingers, causing nausea and fullness. Leaner, smaller meals digest more comfortably.

Are there foods that help nausea?

Yes — bland, low-fat foods like crackers, rice, bananas and ginger. See our foods for nausea guide.
